Frog n Snail models

This image is for Hollywood Chewing Gum and the reason i've included this is because I am going to make a plasticine frog model. This image helps me to visualize what my model will hopefully look like and help me to understand what the basic structure of a frog is. I like the bite mark imprint in this image as it looks like chewing gum which has been chewed. The gum company and Gery Lebecq make the message clear because of the bold heading and the picture of the gum next to the frog.




This is another model done by Gery Lebecq and it is really important for the design of my model as it shows what the basic shape and structure the snail has got. This snail reminds me of the ones on Aardman's t.v. show 'Creature Comforts'.

Plasticine Artists- Gery Lebecq

Gery Lebeque is from Lille, France and creates humorous clay models which he makes on his own and then photographs them. His work ranges from advertisements to humour/comedy.His advertisement work is for French companys such as Renault and the Koobuy.



This image is of a clay/plasticine model of a giraffe playing golf! This image is for a company called Koobuy which sells shopping. I think this image is well thought out as it shows that you can buy golfing equipment there and also it may be trying to communicate that golfing is a leisure activity and so is shopping. I like the colours used such as the traditional pink for the golfing t-shirt and the nice greens and blues for the sky and grass which helps to add to the realism of the image. I really like the detail in the image as well as it makes the image look even more real (even though giraffes don't play golf!). For example the golfing cap helps this effect and so does the giraffes body posture- the golfing swing.



This is one of the posters for the Renault Kangoo car. It shows the Kangoo car which has got its brakes on waiting for a tortoise and a rabbit to cross a zebra crossing. The way I could tell the car had its brakes on is because the front suspension was down and the back end of the car was quite high.



This image is another Renault Kangoo advert which shows a cyclist biking up a hill which has the Kangoo parked at the top of it. I like the mud effect on the cyclists back as it makes it look as though the mud has flicked up from the wheels of the bike.

Plasticine How-to

The song I have chosen is Frogs n Snails by The Lovers. In one of my design ideas I have thought about making plasticine snails to represent the French snails that they eat. I know how to make the basic snail shape but then I wanted to know how to make it more realistic and detailed so I started to research plasticine model making.



This video is how to make a slug and then turn it into a stop motion animation. I think this is useful as it shows how to create the basic slug or snail body and then all I need to do then is create the shell.

Also, in another design idea I've got, I am thinking of making a plasticine French model which has a piece of mime clothing- (black and white striped shirt) and a french painter style hat.
I then researched into the design process of how to make human plasticine figures and found this, which is from the same website as the video above.

This shows me how to make the basic structure of the human by using simple techniques and processes.

Plasticine Research

As most of my design ideas for Mark's project involve plasticine, I thought I would research into it more. I have a keen interest in claymation and enjoy watching animation shorts or films such as Wallace and Gromit and Morph. There is just something about the industry that really inspires me and gets me thinking of how they create their work and where they get their ideas from.

I have been looking on youtube at different plasticine animations and found these:









When creating the models, Aardman use different materials and techniques. The most important part of the creation of these models and animations are the initial ideas. They first create mindmaps of a specific theme or idea they have and then create thumbnail sketches and then storyboards.
After the initial design process they then start creating the models. The most important material when creating the models is plasticine. They sometimes create polystyrene blocks which they then cover with plasticine to create larger models. Another material Aardman use is animation wire which helps support the model and helps to give it flexibility and movement. In my next post I will have a couple of videos of how to make plasticine models.

Eiffel 65- 'Blue' Semiotics

The denotations of the single cover for 'Blue' by Eiffel 65:

An overall blue colour in the image with a blue and white font saying the artist and song name. I also see 3 faces of the band/group members. There are blue tints on the 3 men's hair and around their faces, and also dark blue effects on the 'B' and the 'E'. Also they are young men.

The connotations:

Sympathy with the two men on either ends facial expressions, a space theme/ feel as the blue reminds me of a mysterious position like maybe being on the moon. Poses- from the 3 men's positions. A club feel to the 'blueness' of the image.

Mark: 'Massive Attack- Angel'

Massive Attack are a British music production and vocal duo from Bristol, UK. Working alongside co-producers, they assemble a collective of various favoured session musicians and guest vocalists with whom they make records and tour live. Massive Attack's style is often thought of as being experimental.This video is not actually the proper music video to 'Angel' as this video is from the 1932 film Vampyr so thats why the video is in black and white. For a moment I thought that they had achieved a very realistic black and white video when in actual fact the film is like it anyway!

The video is about how a man has been buried alive and then he is dug up and then killed anyway.I think the audience would be people who like crime-scene type mystery films as the plot to this video is quite mysterious.

Mark: Peter Gabriel- Sledgehamer

Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel was released in 1986 from his album 'So'.It peaked at number one in Canada for four weeks on 21 July 1986, number one on the Billbord Hot 100 chart in the United States on 26 July 1986, and number four in the UK singles chart, thanks in part to a popular and influential music video.

I think this video is communicating the imagination and creativity to the audience through very well animated and thought out scenes in the video. I like the way there are a wide variety of different animations going off such as the stop-motion of the face at the beginning and the plastercine models of his head. I think its being communicated to his fans and maybe people interested in different music videos or animations and also maybe middle aged men aged about 30-40. The processes used in this video are stop-motion animation, clay animation

and normal video recording.

As you can see from the screengrabs above, there are various examples of techniques used such as plastercine modelling for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th images and stopmotion for the 1st and 2nd images.

Mark: Marilyn Manson- The Beautiful People

The video 'The Beautiful People' by Marilyn Manson is a very different video to the ones we normally know of as it contains strange images and it is very gothic. This 'alternative metal' video/ single was released in September 2006 from the album 'Antichrist Superstar'. In the song, its lyrics discuss two major themes. What Manson refers to as 'the culture of beauty' and that culture's connection to Friedrich Nietzsche's theory of master-slave morality — the song's "weak ones", who are "always wrong", are oppressed by and exist solely to "justify the existence of the strong" (the so-called beautiful people).


This image is of Marilyn Manson with a kind of mouth brace on/ dental device. The influences for this image are probably pain, a gothic style theme and maybe death. It maybe to do with the pain that a dentist causes hence the dental device. I think this image and the theme of pain is being communicated to Marilyn Mansons fans and probably goths, emo's etc. It is being communicated (pain) by how the props and dress code are used. The makeup that Marilyn wears is very gothic as it is white foundation with normally black eyeliner around the eyes (as seen here.)



This image shows a part in the video where Marilyn Manson is in a dark room and he has a weird neck brace on. He does this strange flickering with his eyes that make him look as though he is in pain and is evil. The influences that the image reflect is the pain and anger that Marilyn Manson is portraying and the way it looks as though he is tied to a chair with no top on like in one of the 'saw' films. His face expression is also adding to the effect of pain and anger by the way he is clenching his teeth and his eyes being wide open.

This is the music video for 'MARILYN MANSON- THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE'. Notice how evil and angry the video is by the way the image is made so dark and the content and props in it.

Frogs n Snails

Frogs and snails are particularly relevant to my song as the title of the song is 'Frogs n Snails'. French people eat frogs legs and snails so in the song, its talking, well singing, about how the English are scared of the French as they supposedly eat frogs legs and snails all the time.

We used the Forced Analog sheet to help us generate idea images relating to our song choice. As the song I have chosen is called 'Frog n Snail', and I have analysed the lyrics, I worked out that the song is relating to the French, the English, Frogs, Snails and various other themes. I am going to get about 5 pictures for each key word the song made me think of/ is to do with.

Andy Warhol was drawn to Marilyn Monroe. From the first time he saw her he was mesmerized. The attraction he had to Monroe was not simply because of her beauty though, in fact, he felt he identified with her in a way few others could. His perception of her was bi-fold: an object of desire and a role model. Because of his deep appreciation for her, Warhol was able to illuminate the hidden and quite often dark side of her personality in his work. The famous Marilyn Monroe silkscreens by Andy Warhol quite accurately portray the legendary actresss beauty and sex appeal, but in a complex and unique way.

This video is an example of video jockeying. I like this video as it gives me lots of ideas and I think it is a great video because it features lots of different colours and different video footage.

Album Advert

This video is of an advertisement for 'Cream Trance Anthems Ibiza 2009'

The video consists of a couple in a swimming pool, supposedly in Ibiza, messing around in the pool.

The video is in slow motion which shows the water splashing around which looks really good.

Also, the video plays short previews of some of the songs that can be found on the c.d. and text comes up showing some of the artists featured.

Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni commonly known as Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer.

This painting is from the Sistine Chapel- It is called 'Creation'. I really think the detail and skill it took to paint this image is amazing. I think this was done by a very fine paintbrush which must of took ages to paint. This is one of the most iconic images/ paintings in the world.

Vincent Van Gough

Vincent Van Gough was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact.Today, he is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art.

This painting is called 'Sunflowers'. It is probably the most famous and most recognisable paintings Van Gough did. The image is an oil painting which is done on a canvas. The thing I like about this image is that it looks very attractive and warm because it is of flowers and the warm colour of the yellow. Its not that detailed but it is very powerful and so is one of the worlds best known paintings.

Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British figurative painter. His artwork is known for its bold, austere, homoerotic and often violent or nightmarish imagery, which typically shows room-bound masculine figures isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages set against flat, nondescript backgrounds.

This image shows a self portrait of Francis Bacon. It was painted in 1971. I think the way the face is kind of deformed makes the image different and interesting as it grabs the viewers attention. This image was drawn using oil on canvas. I like the way the face is dark but then light in some places which show the contours such as the nose and the eyes.

Georges Braque

Georges Braque was a major 20th century French painter and sculptor who, along with Pablo Picasso, developed the art movement known as Cubism.This image is called 'Houses At L'Estaque'. L'Estaque is a small village just outside Marseille (France). I think this image is trying to represent the small village as there are a few houses in the painting with a few trees as well. The houses don't have any detail on them apart from the basic shape and roof line. This image has been made by using oil on canvas.

Joan Miro

Joan Miró i Ferrà was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as surrealism.

This image is called 'The Garden'. It shows a strange one eyed creature in a colourful garden with lots of plants and creatures in it. The thing I like about this image is the way the use of the bright, big, bold colours help the image to stand out and make you look at everything in the image.This image stood out when I was looking at Joan Miros' art because of how interesting and bright it looks. I am not quite sure how this has been produced, although it may have been hand drawn and then painted.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was an American Painter, printmaker and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art.

In my opinion, this is one of the most well known pieces of art in the modern day. It represents Marilyn Monroe and it has been made using bright colours hence the pinks and the yellow. This piece of art has also been made in many other differnt colours as well. (see below). I like the accuracy and realism the image has in comparison to Marilyn Monroe. I think the image has been made by using different print methods and by maybe using a photograph of her.

Fine Art- Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg was an American artist who came to prominence in the 1950's transition from abstract expressionism to pop art.


This image is showing various images of different things. I am not sure what they are meant to represent, possibly things to do with Robert Rauschenbergs life. The thing I like about this image is that it is very colourful and I like the way the image has been made by using different print and collage techniques. Two of the images in this piece of art are a parachuter and a man with a green tie.

Geoff Taylor has illustrated book covers for many publishers around the world for over 30 years, covering a wide range of genre, from classic childrens books such as Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Geoff is best known within the Fantasy and Sci-Fi genres.

Jack Lawrence

Jack Lawrence is a British comics creator. Prior to 2002 he worked as an animator. He now works as a freelance comics illustrator, working on titles such as A.T.O.M., Cartoon Network, Doctor Who Adventures, 2000 AD, Gogos Crazybones and Spiderman Tower of Power.

John Bradley

This image is of Freddie Mercury. I like the way John Bradley has made him have oversized front teeth which makes it quite humorous. I think he is trying to communicate the way Freddie rocked whilst in Queen. He does this by the pose he is in.

This image is of Wayne Rooney and the then England manager Sven Goran Eriksson. This is a caricature style illustration. I like the way Wayne Rooney is really big whereas Sven is tiy compared to him.

John Bradley has been an illustrator for nearly 20 years. He is one of Britains foremost illustrators.

Maurice Pledger

This image shows a book by Maurice Pledger. I like all the different creatures on the front and the litter seal. I think Maurice is communicating the things on the front cover are what you can expect and find inside. Its also a touch and feel book with illustrations around it.

Marice Pledger is an illustrator and a childrens book illustrator/author.
