Mona Hatoum

Mona Hatoum is a performance artist and installation artist of palestinian origin, who lives in London.

While mostly focusing on confrontational themes such as violence, opression and voyeurism, she has often made powerful references to the vulnerability of our human bodies.

This image is called 'The Mexican Cage'. It was made in 2002 and represents a colourful birdcage. The work suggests a metaphoric connection between a caged canary and the life of a Mexican factory worker. I think that the 'friendly colours' of the piece contrast with the object- which is like an 'unfriendly cage' because factorys are normally realised as dull, damp places with not much light whereas this piece of art is bright and colourful so in some ways contradicts each other.
