Mark: 'Massive Attack- Angel'
Massive Attack are a British music production and vocal duo from Bristol, UK. Working alongside co-producers, they assemble a collective of various favoured session musicians and guest vocalists with whom they make records and tour live. Massive Attack's style is often thought of as being experimental. This video is not actually the proper music video to 'Angel' as this video is from the 1932 film Vampyr so thats why the video is in black and white. For a moment I thought that they had achieved a very realistic black and white video when in actual fact the film is like it anyway!
Here are some screengrabs from the video.
The video is about how a man has been buried alive and then he is dug up and then killed anyway.I think the audience would be people who like crime-scene type mystery films as the plot to this video is quite mysterious.

Mark: Peter Gabriel- Sledgehamer
As you can see from the screengrabs above, there are various examples of techniques used such as plastercine modelling for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th images and stopmotion for the 1st and 2nd images.
Mark: Marilyn Manson- The Beautiful People
This image is of Marilyn Manson with a kind of mouth brace on/ dental device. The influences for this image are probably pain, a gothic style theme and maybe death. It maybe to do with the pain that a dentist causes hence the dental device. I think this image and the theme of pain is being communicated to Marilyn Mansons fans and probably goths, emo's etc. It is being communicated (pain) by how the props and dress code are used. The makeup that Marilyn wears is very gothic as it is white foundation with normally black eyeliner around the eyes (as seen here.)
This image shows a part in the video where Marilyn Manson is in a dark room and he has a weird neck brace on. He does this strange flickering with his eyes that make him look as though he is in pain and is evil. The influences that the image reflect is the pain and anger that Marilyn Manson is portraying and the way it looks as though he is tied to a chair with no top on like in one of the 'saw' films. His face expression is also adding to the effect of pain and anger by the way he is clenching his teeth and his eyes being wide open.
This is the music video for 'MARILYN MANSON- THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE'. Notice how evil and angry the video is by the way the image is made so dark and the content and props in it.

Andy Warhol-Marilyn, 1967
Andy Warhol was drawn to Marilyn Monroe. From the first time he saw her he was mesmerized. The attraction he had to Monroe was not simply because of her beauty though, in fact, he felt he identified with her in a way few others could. His perception of her was bi-fold: an object of desire and a role model. Because of his deep appreciation for her, Warhol was able to illuminate the hidden and quite often dark side of her personality in his work. The famous Marilyn Monroe silkscreens by Andy Warhol quite accurately portray the legendary actresss beauty and sex appeal, but in a complex and unique way.

Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian polymath, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer who was born on April 15, 1452.
The Mona Lisa is a 16th century portrait painted in oil on a poplar panel by Leonardo Da Vinci during the Renaissance in Italy. It is one of the most famous paintings in the world, recognized by millions due to the fact that it is so popular and because the painting includes so much detail. In the painting it shows Mona Lisa sitting in a position with her back straight

Siegfried Sassoon
Leapt sure from eye to brain and back to eye,
Weaving unconscious tapestries of life,
Are now thrust inward, dungeoned from the sky.
And he who has watched his world and loved it all,
Starless and old and blind, a sight for pity,
With feeble steps and fingers on the wall,
Gropes with his staff along the rumbling city.
'Jack fell as he'd have wished,' the Mother said, And folded up the letter that she'd read. 'The Colonel writes so nicely.' Something broke In the tired voice that quavered to a choke. She half looked up. 'We mothers are so proud Of our dead soldiers.' Then her face was bowed. Quietly the Brother Officer went out. He'd told the poor old dear some gallant lies That she would nourish all her days, no doubt. For while he coughed and mumbled, her weak eyes Had shone with gentle triumph, brimmed with joy, Because he'd been so brave, her glorious boy. He thought how 'Jack', cold-footed, useless swine, Had panicked down the trench that night the mine Went up at Wicked Corner; how he'd tried To get sent home, and how, at last, he died, Blown to small bits. And no one seemed to care Except that lonely woman with white hair. The Kiss To these I turn, in these I trust; Brother Lead and Sister Steel. To his blind power I make appeal; I guard her beauty clean from rust. He spins and burns and loves the air, And splits a skull to win my praise; But up the nobly marching days She glitters naked, cold and fair. Sweet Sister, grant your soldier this; That in good fury he may feel The body where he sets his heel Quail from your downward darting kiss. |
Alfred Lord Tennyson
Written 1854
Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd & thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke,
Shatter'd & sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!
- Under my eye?
- Over the sky?
- And nature die?
- I.
Airy, fairy Lilian,
Flitting, fairy Lilian,
When I ask her if she love me,
Claps her tiny hands above me,
Laughing all she can;
She’ll not tell me if she love me,
Cruel little Lilian.
- II.
When my passion seeks
Pleasance in love-sighs,
She, looking thro’ and thro’ me
Thoroughly to undo me,
Smiling, never speaks:
So innocent-arch, so cunning-simple,
From beneath her gathered wimple
Glancing with black-beaded eyes,
Till the lightning laughters dimple
The baby-roses in her cheeks;
Then away she flies.
- III.
Prythee weep, May Lilian!
Gaiety without eclipse
Wearieth me, May Lilian;
Thro’ my very heart it thrilleth
When from crimson-threaded lips
Silver-treble laughter trilleth:
Prythee weep, May Lilian!
- IV.
Praying all I can,
If prayers will not hush thee,
Airy Lilian,
Like a rose-leaf I will crush thee,
Fairy Lilian.

The Soul of Spain
In the rain in the rain in the rain in the rain in Spain. Does it rain in Spain? Oh yes my dear on the contrary and there are no bull fights. The dancers dance in long white pants It isn't right to yence your aunts Come Uncle, let's go home. Home is where the heart is, home is where the fart is. Come let us fart in the home. There is no art in a fart. Still a fart may not be artless. Let us fart an artless fart in the home. Democracy. Democracy. Bill says democracy must go. Go democracy. Go Go Go Bill's father would never knowingly sit down at table with a Democrat. Now Bill says democracy must go. Go on democracy. Democracy is the shit. Relativity is the shit. Dictators are the shit. Menken is the shit. Waldo Frank is the shit. The Broom is the shit. Dada is the shit. Dempsey is the shit. This is not a complete list. They say Ezra is the shit. But Ezra is nice. Come let us build a monument to Ezra. Good a very nice monument. You did that nicely Can you do another? Let me try and do one. Let us all try and do one. Let the little girl over there on the corner try and do one. Come on little girl. Do one for Ezra. Good. You have all been successful children. Now let us clean the mess up. The Dial does a monument to Proust. We have done a monument to Ezra. A monument is a monument. After all it is the spirit of the thing that counts.
I Like Americans
By A Foreigner I like Americans. They are so unlike Canadians. They do not take their policemen seriously. They come to Montreal to drink. Not to criticize. They claim they won the war. But they know at heart that they didn't. They have such respect for Englishmen. They like to live abroad. They do not brag about how they take baths. But they take them. Their teeth are so good. And they wear B.V.D.'s all the year round. I wish they didn't brag about it. They have the second best navy in the world. But they never mention it. They would like to have Henry Ford for president. But they will not elect him. They saw through Bill Bryan. They have gotten tired of Billy Sunday. Their men have such funny hair cuts. They are hard to suck in on Europe. They have been there once. They produced Barney Google, Mutt and Jeff. And Jiggs. They do not hang lady murderers. They put them in vaudeville. They read the Saturday Evening Post And believe in Santa Claus. When they make money They make a lot of money. They are fine people.
I Like Canadians
By A Foreigner I like Canadians. They are so unlike Americans. They go home at night. Their cigarets don't smell bad. Their hats fit. They really believe that they won the war. They don't believe in Literature. They think Art has been exaggerated. But they are wonderful on ice skates. A few of them are very rich. But when they are rich they buy more horses Than motor cars. Chicago calls Toronto a puritan town. But both boxing and horse-racing are illegal In Chicago. Nobody works on Sunday. Nobody. That doesn't make me mad. There is only one Woodbine. But were you ever at Blue Bonnets? If you kill somebody with a motor car in Ontario You are liable to go to jail. So it isn't done. There have been over 500 people killed by motor cars In Chicago So far this year. It is hard to get rich in Canada. But it is easy to make money. There are too many tea rooms. But, then, there are no cabarets. If you tip a waiter a quarter He says "Thank you." Instead of calling the bouncer. They let women stand up in the street cars. Even if they are good-looking. They are all in a hurry to get home to supper And their radio sets. They are a fine people. I like them.
A Moveable Feast
This vibrant portrait of Paris in the 1920s, published posthumously in 1964, is vintage Hemingway--evocative, self-mocking and frank. In an extraordinary chronicle of the sights, sounds, and tastes of Paris in a bygone era, Hemingway offers readers a view of his life and the people that populated his expatriate world--Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and other literary luminaries.

Michelangelo
This painting is from the Sistine Chapel- It is called 'Creation'. I really think the detail and skill it took to paint this image is amazing. I think this was done by a very fine paintbrush which must of took ages to paint. This is one of the most iconic images/ paintings in the world.
Vincent Van Gough
This painting is called 'Sunflowers'. It is probably the most famous and most recognisable paintings Van Gough did. The image is an oil painting which is done on a canvas. The thing I like about this image is that it looks very attractive and warm because it is of flowers and the warm colour of the yellow. Its not that detailed but it is very powerful and so is one of the worlds best known paintings.

Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British figurative painter. His artwork is known for its bold, austere, homoerotic and often violent or nightmarish imagery, which typically shows room-bound masculine figures isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages set against flat, nondescript backgrounds.
Georges Braque
Joan Miro
Joan Miró i Ferrà was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as surrealism.
This image is called 'The Garden'. It shows a strange one eyed creature in a colourful garden with lots of plants and creatures in it. The thing I like about this image is the way the use of the bright, big, bold colours help the image to stand out and make you look at everything in the image. This image stood out when I was looking at Joan Miros' art because of how interesting and bright it looks. I am not quite sure how this has been produced, although it may have been hand drawn and then painted.Andy Warhol
In my opinion, this is one of the most well known pieces of art in the modern day. It represents Marilyn Monroe and it has been made using bright colours hence the pinks and the yellow. This piece of art has also been made in many other differnt colours as well. (see below). I like the accuracy and realism the image has in comparison to Marilyn Monroe. I think the image has been made by using different print methods and by maybe using a photograph of her.
Fine Art- Robert Rauschenberg
This image is showing various images of different things. I am not sure what they are meant to represent, possibly things to do with Robert Rauschenbergs life. The thing I like about this image is that it is very colourful and I like the way the image has been made by using different print and collage techniques. Two of the images in this piece of art are a parachuter and a man with a green tie.
